ATEX Standards
There are two (EU) standards for equipment that needs to be able to work in hazardous (potentially explosive) environments. Such equipment needs to be flame combustion and explosion-proof: an Equipment Directive and there’s a Use Directive.
Equipment Directive
This is labelled 94/9/EC and is concerned with manufacture and sale of such equipment.
Use Directive
This is labelled 1999/92/EC and is concerned with categorizing hazardous areas and with choosing, installing, maintaining, and inspecting the equipment.
ATEX-EX Flanged Heaters
If the fluids used in your process are non-corrosive to their construction materials [see our corrosion table], flanged heaters are perfect for installation in Areas with Explosion Hazard (Zone 1 and 2). We supply them with full ATEX-IECEx certification.
Typical applications include:
- fresh and sea water
- crude and synthetic oils
- air and process gases
- tank heating
- heating medium
- liquid-vapour separation
- glycol reboiling
- vapouriser for butane and propane
- regeneration of molecular filters

ATEX-EX Threaded Heaters
Threaded immersion heaters for Explosion Hazardous Locations, Zone 1 and 2, groups IIA, IIB, and IIC, T1-T6 temperature classes. ATEX II 2G Ex d IIC T1-T6 certification, according to EN 60079-0 / 60079-1, and IECEx Ex d IIC T1-T6, according to IEC 60079-0 / 60079-1.
Our threaded immersion heaters comprise tubular elements welded to a screw cap, which can be screwed to a threaded inlet placed in the tank wall.
The electric heating elements are manufactured from selected Ni Cr 80/20 wire, placed in the center of a metal tube, with high-quality magnesium oxide (MgO) insulation compacted by drawing to cold. The sheath of the elements is generally made of one of the following materials: carbon steel, 304 (L), 316 (L) or 321 stainless steel, Incoloy 800 or 825, Inconel 600, 625, titanium, copper, Monel, or other materials available.
The elements are bonded by welding or brazing to a threaded screw cap, available in a variety of materials for different element sheath types and applications. The screw cap can have BSP, NPT or ISO threads. Special threads and materials are available on request. The heaters can be equipped with a control thermostat and/or a manual reset safety thermostat.
