Roughly speaking, due to its density and viscosity, heavy oil will heat up in half the time of oil, or if you prefer, require around half the heating power to heat up the same volume as oil in the same period of time. However this will require a much lower watt density than on a oily heater. When you know how much power you require, your next decision is whether to apply direct heat via a heating element 250w – 6kW
or a screwed immersion heater 1kW – 24kW
or for greater than 24kW, a flanged immersion heater
or perhaps even a vat heater (2-18kW) if you wish to access from the top of the tank.
